Introduction

Translating to “Hot Lentil Rice Dish,” Bisi Bele Bath is a signature recipe of Karnataka. It blends rice, lentils, vegetables, tamarind, and an aromatic spice mix into a wholesome, comforting meal, often enjoyed with boondi or papad.

1. Preparing the Spice Mix

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp chana dal
  • 1 tbsp urad dal
  • 2 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 small piece cinnamon
  • 4–5 dry red chilies
  • 2 tbsp grated coconut (optional)

Instructions:

  • Dry roast all spices until aromatic.
  • Cool and grind into a fine powder or paste with coconut.

2. Cooking Dal and Rice

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup toor dal
  • ½ cup rice
  • 2½ cups water

Instructions:

  • Pressure cook dal and rice together until soft. Set aside.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup chopped vegetables (carrot, beans, peas)
  • 1 lemon-sized ball of tamarind (soaked)
  • 2 tbsp Bisi Bele Bath powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Ghee or oil
  • Mustard seeds, curry leaves, hing for tempering

Instructions:

  • Boil vegetables and tamarind extract together.
  • Add spice powder, cooked dal-rice, salt. Mix well and simmer.
  • Temper mustard, curry leaves, and hing in ghee and pour over.
