Uppittu (Upma)

Introduction
Known as Uppittu in Kannada, Upma is a fluffy semolina breakfast dish. It’s quick, filling, and a regular morning fix for many Bangaloreans—customizable with vegetables, spices, and nuts.
1. Ingredients
- 1 cup rava (semolina)
- 2½ cups water
- 1 onion (finely chopped)
- 1 green chili
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp urad dal
- Curry leaves
- Salt, oil, lemon juice
2. Instructions
- Dry roast rava until light golden. Set aside.
- Heat oil, add mustard, urad dal, chilies, curry leaves, onions. Sauté.
- Add water and salt. Bring to a boil.
- Slowly add rava while stirring.
- Cover and steam for 3–4 minutes. Finish with lemon juice.
3. Pro Tips
- Stir continuously to avoid lumps.
- A dash of ghee at the end adds flavor.
4. Serving Suggestions
Serve with coconut chutney or pickle.

Upma may be pan-Indian, but Karnataka’s version often includes vegetables and fresh grated coconut.
