Introduction

Known as Uppittu in Kannada, Upma is a fluffy semolina breakfast dish. It’s quick, filling, and a regular morning fix for many Bangaloreans—customizable with vegetables, spices, and nuts.

1. Ingredients

  • 1 cup rava (semolina)
  • 2½ cups water
  • 1 onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 green chili
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • Curry leaves
  • Salt, oil, lemon juice

2. Instructions

  • Dry roast rava until light golden. Set aside.
  • Heat oil, add mustard, urad dal, chilies, curry leaves, onions. Sauté.
  • Add water and salt. Bring to a boil.
  • Slowly add rava while stirring.
  • Cover and steam for 3–4 minutes. Finish with lemon juice.

3. Pro Tips

  • Stir continuously to avoid lumps.
  • A dash of ghee at the end adds flavor.

4. Serving Suggestions

Serve with coconut chutney or pickle.

Upma may be pan-Indian, but Karnataka’s version often includes vegetables and fresh grated coconut.
