Tekeli Pitha

Steamed Rice Cake Origin: Assam

Introduction
A soft and mildly sweet Assamese rice cake steamed in small metal containers, often served for breakfast.

Historical Relevance
Pitha is integral to Bihu celebrations — Tekeli Pitha gets its name from the ‘tekeli’ or kettle used for steaming it.

  1. Preparing the Tekeli Pitha

    Ingredients:
    1 cup rice flour
    ¼ cup grated coconut
    2 tbsp jaggery
    Pinch of salt
    Water for steaming

Instructions:

  1. Mix rice flour, coconut, and jaggery.
  2. Place mixture in small bowls or tekelis and steam for 10–12 minutes.

Pro Tips

Serving Suggestions
Serve warm with a drizzle of melted ghee.

Fun Fact
Each Assamese household has its own version — some add black sesame or banana for flavor.
