A Festive Pumpkin & Lentil Curry

Introduction
Erissery is a comforting, mildly spiced curry made with pumpkin, red beans, and coconut. It’s an essential part of the Onam Sadhya and showcases Kerala’s signature coconut-based flavor palette.
Ingredients
- 1½ cups yellow pumpkin (cubed)
- ½ cup red cowpeas (vanpayar), soaked
- 1 cup grated coconut
- 2 garlic cloves, 1 tsp cumin
- ½ tsp turmeric, 2 dry red chilies
- Mustard seeds, curry leaves, coconut oil
Instructions
- Pressure cook soaked cowpeas and pumpkin with salt and turmeric.
- Grind coconut, garlic, cumin into a paste.
- Add paste to cooked mix and simmer.
- Temper mustard seeds, red chilies, and curry leaves in coconut oil.
- Pour over curry, garnish with roasted coconut.
Serving Suggestion
Served with red rice or part of a full Sadhya meal.
