Poppy Seed Kheer from Udupi Temples Origin: Karnataka

Introduction
Gasagase Payasa is a creamy, mildly spiced kheer made with poppy seeds and coconut — offered in Udupi temples and homes during special pujas.

  1. Making the Paste
    Ingredients:
  • 2 tbsp white poppy seeds
  • 2 tbsp grated coconut
  • 1 tbsp rice
  • 2–3 cardamoms

Instructions:

  • Soak poppy seeds and rice for 30 minutes. Grind with coconut and cardamom to a smooth paste.
  1. Cooking the Payasa
    Ingredients:
  • 2 cups coconut milk
  • ½ cup jaggery
  • Ghee-roasted cashews and raisins

Instructions:

  • Boil paste with jaggery and thin coconut milk.
  • Finish with thick coconut milk and garnishes.

Pro Tips

  • Don’t boil after adding thick coconut milk.
  • Strain coconut milk if grainy.

Serving Suggestions

  • Served warm during Shivratri or Ekadashi rituals.
