Introduction

Erissery is a comforting, mildly spiced curry made with pumpkin, red beans, and coconut. It’s an essential part of the Onam Sadhya and showcases Kerala’s signature coconut-based flavor palette.

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups yellow pumpkin (cubed)
  • ½ cup red cowpeas (vanpayar), soaked
  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • 2 garlic cloves, 1 tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp turmeric, 2 dry red chilies
  • Mustard seeds, curry leaves, coconut oil

Instructions

  • Pressure cook soaked cowpeas and pumpkin with salt and turmeric.
  • Grind coconut, garlic, cumin into a paste.
  • Add paste to cooked mix and simmer.
  • Temper mustard seeds, red chilies, and curry leaves in coconut oil.
  • Pour over curry, garnish with roasted coconut.

Serving Suggestion
 Served with red rice or part of a full Sadhya meal.
