Gasagase Payasa
Poppy Seed Kheer from Udupi Temples

Introduction
Gasagase Payasa is a creamy, mildly spiced kheer made with poppy seeds and coconut — offered in Udupi temples and homes during special pujas.
- Making the Paste
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp white poppy seeds
- 2 tbsp grated coconut
- 1 tbsp rice
- 2–3 cardamoms
Instructions:
- Soak poppy seeds and rice for 30 minutes. Grind with coconut and cardamom to a smooth paste.
- Cooking the Payasa
Ingredients:
- 2 cups coconut milk
- ½ cup jaggery
- Ghee-roasted cashews and raisins
Instructions:
- Boil paste with jaggery and thin coconut milk.
- Finish with thick coconut milk and garnishes.
Pro Tips
- Don’t boil after adding thick coconut milk.
- Strain coconut milk if grainy.

- Served warm during Shivratri or Ekadashi rituals.
