Parippu Curry

Lentils with Ghee and Coconut Origin: Kerala

Introduction
A humble yet sacred dish, Parippu Curry is the first item served on a banana leaf during Onam Sadhya. It’s made with moong dal, coconut, and ghee.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup moong dal (yellow)

  • ¼ cup grated coconut

  • Cumin, green chili

  • Ghee, mustard seeds, curry leaves

Instructions

  • Dry roast moong dal till aromatic. Cook until soft.

  • Grind coconut, cumin, green chili into paste.

  • Mix paste with dal, add salt. Simmer briefly.

  • Temper mustard, curry leaves in ghee and add to curry.

Serving Suggestion
Eaten with Kerala red rice and papadam.

Though simple, Parippu Curry holds ceremonial importance in Malayali culture.
